Hey Oppo

Kinja'd!!!

Well it’s almost been a week of Mustang ownership, and what can I say it’s pretty great so far. However now I face a different dilemma.

Long time readers of Oppositelock will know that I have !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Now don’t get me wrong, the BRAAAAAPalier was good to me, but the Mustang is far superior in almost every respect.

However, there is a school of thought that says “A RWD V8 convertible that you have to park on the street is not a good car for Alberta winters”.

And I’m not convinced that that school of thought is wrong to be honest.

At first, I was sick of the Cavalier and wanted to sell it.

However, let’s be honest at nearly 234,000 kms and 13 years old it’s not going to fetch a lot.

Add in that the Cavalier needs an out of province inspection ($200) a sway bar link ($10 plus an hour or two lying on the ground) and a new windshield ($249) so let’s call that an even $500 in work.

I am thinking I could get from about $600-1200 for this car. I only paid $2600 so it’s an amazing value per km but it’s just not a lot of money.

Plus, if I drive the Mustang all winter, I will need winter rims and tires. I’ll bet winters in 16 or 17 inches are going to cost most of what I could get for the Cavalier.

That’s where I am at. Currently the Cavalier is insured, but it’s registration exemption ends in two weeks. So either the work will be done, or it will be parked.

My options:

1) Sell the cavalier, use said money for winter rims and tires for Mustang.

2) Fix Cavalier, then immediately uninsure and park. Drag out in winter time, and find somewhere safe to store Mustang.

3) Uninsure and park the Cavalier immediately. *TRY* to fix in September for out of province inspection.

I am leaning towards one or two. I may as well fix the thing while I can drive it to and from the glass shop, is the arguement for #2.

Either way, the Cavalier will be reduced to probably commuting to and from work in the winter time. The 2012 Focus my girlfriend owns, will be the winter road tripping vehicle.

What do you guys think? I am fine selling it, but I’m just not sure it really makes a lot of economic sense to do so given it has winter tires, and uninsuring the Mustang for winter would lead to some cost savings.

I am at same delima with my metro, I’ve been driving my wife’s old car, so I really don’t need it but it’s also not worth much as it also needs work.

I think I'll get another transmission for it and get rid of it.

Number 2. It saves stress to have a second car to fall back on and you’ll save a bunch of money by uninsuring the Mustang for the winter, I bet.

Fix immediately and park. With the caveat that you still occasionally drive it to keep everything working in okay order.

I think that’s probably the best solution, since driving the mustang in the winter isn’t the best winter vehicle idea.

How bad are the winters there? You can certainly drive a RWD car in the winter with proper snow tires, but if they salt the roads there, that’s really hard on a car. Plus your is a convertible, and winter is very hard on the tops of those.

If you want to keep the Mustang for a long time, I’d do option 2.

How much does it really cost to insure the cavalier? And the mustang? Not sure how insurance works in Alberta but here in California it is pretty cheap to do liability only insurance. That way you can use your beater car any time you want and don’t have to deal with redoing paperwork every six months.

As for un-insuring and re-insuring the mustang... what if it gets stolen while it is parked and un-insured? You’ll still have the payment and no money. AND you won’t be able to take it out on those random nice days for a top down windows up heater on full blast down the back roads.

As for repairs, I would say just do them. Honestly, since it’s going to go for so little anyway and you know it’s running nicely, hold onto it until someone in your family or a close friend is in a bind and needs a car, or someone’s son or daughter needs a cheap first car. Then you get nearly the same money plus hero status (not to mention helping someone you care about).

I’m with fixing the Cavalier (as much as I am not a fan of them...) and store the Mustang for the winter. Your Albertan winters can be harsher than ours here in Nova Scotia, so I imagine there is no shortage of road salt...

I’m always a proponent of the winter beater. So option 2.

I’d say 2, a winter beater is nice to have, and you have the winter to think on it more and decide if you want to keep the winter beater or sell it.

Alberta winters can be cold, but they’re relatively dry. And I don’t know how much salt NS uses, but compared to Quebec, Alberta uses very little.

As one who DD’s an AMG in Ohio, sell the Cavalier, use proceeds on snow tires.

Only because EVERY single time you drive that crap can, you’ll hate it even more.

Oh, and fix, park, winter beater. You’d be devastated if something happened to mustang in snow.

Cheers.

This is Edmonton Alberta. We don’t receive all that much snow, because we are east of the mountains. But the record low temp is -56.9F ambient temperature. Last year, I went through frigid Ottawa’s coldest winter in 100 years and it only got down to like -20F, and -20F is the coldest cold to have ever colded.

Alberta winters are colder but considerably drier than East Coast winters.

So uninsuring the car isn’t exactly what I meant. It would go into storage insurance, which covers fire, theft, flood, and that sort of stuff, but not driving insurance.

The Cavalier this summer will probably be completely uninsured. Fire or flood? Take to auto recycler and collect $250. Theft? Well, that’d be a shame.

I’ve experienced -20F several times, and it is just freaking miserable. I cannot imagine -56.9F.

4. Use it as a 24 hours of Lemons racer

5. Stance it.

6. Lift it.

7. put it on blocks in your front yard, cut a hole in the roof, fill with dirt and plant a tree in it.
